How Can I Get Help?

People who get early help for psychosis often recover better and faster. In the UK, the average time it takes for someone experiencing psychosis to get help is between 12 and 24 months.

If psychosis is left untreated, it is not uncommon for both social and psychological disruption to occur. The first three years are viewed as the critical period and a time when intervention is most needed and effective.

The Sheffield Early Intervention Team targets and helps people who may be experiencing psychosis for the first time. We will respond to clients aged between 14 and 35 with no more than twelve months experience of psychosis. Medical diagnosis is not essential for referral to our service. Anyone thought to be experiencing psychosis will be considered.

There are four Early Intervention Teams in Sheffield, working together to cover the city. The teams are comprised of a consultant Psychiatrist (Medical Doctor), a Psychologist, Social Workers, Community Mental Health Nurses, Support Workers and secretarial input. We also have strong links within both statutory and voluntary sectors to ensure that clients have access to additional services they may find helpful.

Support from Sheffield Early Intervention Services is flexible, confidential, non judgemental and tailored to individual needs. It is designed to help people get on with their lives as normally as possible. Support includes access to medication, help with underlying psychological issues, steps to help recovery and prevent relapse and practical help with housing, benefits, employment and legislation.

People who experience mental health problems are still able to work or study, though there may be times when extra support or breaks are needed. The Early Intervention team aims to work alongside people to help them reach or keep the job or college course they want. We know that being in some type of employment or education is generally better for mental health. We also know that with the right support people are more likely to achieve those qualifications or career goals they have been aiming for. The Early Intervention team offers this support through their own workers and by linking up with employment, training, volunteering, career and education services throughout the city.
